Meet Helmut Richter

Your Local Guide & Storyteller

Born and raised in Namibia and played barefoot on his father’s farm, Helmut has always been drawn to the bush, local history, and the stories hidden in the land. Over 12 years ago, he turned that passion into his life’s work - guiding guests across Cape Town, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Today, he’s known for showing travelers the Africa they never knew they’d find - full of warmth, knowledge, and truly unexpected moments.

Our Story — Where It All Began

The unexpected moments that shape our biggest adventures

We invite our guests to leave their expectations behind. To relax, unplug, and sink in to the present moment, away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. And their phones. There’s so much to see and experience here. And so much of it is unexpected.

I grew up in Namibia and guiding always felt like the path I’d return to. Over 12 years ago, I left the restaurant and hospitality industry and started leading tours across Southern Africa — from Cape Town to Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

For me, there’s nothing better than seeing my guests experience Africa for the first time (and the tenth). Many have become dear friends who return year after year, bringing family along for the ride.

The roots of Expect the Unexpected are exactly that - unexpected. I met my wife, Sara and at the prospect of it seemed impossible, but something magical happens when you put down your plans and live in the moment. What started as chance turned into love - and she encouraged me to finally make my dream of having my own tour company a reality.

That’s what I hope for you when you travel with me: that you leave your expectations behind, stay present, and discover moments you’ll never forget.

What Does Expect the Unexpected Mean?

When I’m on tour with clients, I always tell them: “Expect the Unexpected.” It’s Africa, after all - and things have a way of going here. It’s “Now Now.” Things don’t always go according to plan, and that’s the beauty of it. It’s often these unplanned moments that bring the most wonderful and unexpected experiences.

I’ve seen this happen over and over - when something that could seem like a problem turns into a story you’ll never forget. Once, a flat tire opened up an opportunity for a short wilderness walk while waiting for the repair - and that walk led to an animal sighting that never would have happened otherwise.

That’s why I say it (and even get it printed on my t-shirts!) Expect the Unexpected!
